Of the Long Crendon tree
John Shrimpton who fathered nearly all the known Long Crendon Shrimpton descendants and 99% of all the needlemaking ones was as far as is known an only child so it all hinged on him.
He was the son of John baptised 6th March 1683- buried 28th August 1762 who married Katerin Fryer 31st October 1717. She was buried 23rd August 1762 as Catherine. John had five/four known siblings. William 1685 -either 1740 or 1759 who may or may not have married Sarah Moss (there is no recorded marriage for this but her father's will evidences it) or the marriage was to Sarah by his cousin also called William. Elizabeth 1688- whose burial is difficult to place because of the number of Elizabeths but was either 1724/1728 or 1734. Thomas baptised 11th July 1697 and either the same Thomas or a second Thomas baptised later in the same year 15th February 1697 (the year then starting on Lady Day in March not January). There is no burial for either Thomas in the parish records.
They were the children of John (slight confusion in the parish register between a baptism or a burial 10th October 1651 but even if this is a burial entry the evidence for John's parentage is given in his father's will) buried 24th January 1730 who married Elizabeth Edmonds (same possible burials as the last Elizabeth I gave) whom he married on 17th December 1682.
John was one of seven or eight children depending on whether there was an earlier John buried in 1651. The entry looks to me like a burial but has been read as a baptism in the IGI. The civil war is obviously impacting on the fullness of the register and some of these siblings baptisms do not exist which could also include the John who lived. The evidence for further children is given from the father's will.
Alice 1648-1703
Richard 1650-1729 who married Joane Heibourn ?-1738 in 1702 and who other known Shrimptons descend. He was the more significant brother consistently appearing in the court rolls like his father before him as a juror.
Posssibly another John buried in 1651
The order then goes purely on guess work.
Probably John who married Elizabeth Edmonds.
William ?-1714 who married Elizabeth (see burial dates of previous Elizabeths) though no marriage found for him. As a younger brother he died a poor man.
Thomas ?-? who as an even younger brother is likely to have had to leave the village as there was no livelihood for him.
Elizabeth ?-? who married Thomas Colliar in 1692
Robert 1665-? who was not mentioned in father's will and for which there was no burial in the registers but like Thomas probably left the village.
That leaves only two more generations with a possibility of a connection with earlier Shrimptons in the village which will probably remain unproven because of the loss of the neighbouring village of Shabbington's registers for this period as the family moved between villages.

Thomas baptised 28th January 1749-buried 9th December 1818,
a needlemaker on the 1798 Posse Comitatus of 1798
married Sarah Deane circa 1752-buried 11th May 1819.
They had 16 children of which George was the 12th child and the
penultimate boy of 8.
Thomas was the 6th child of 11 children and the 4th
son of 6 of John baptised 26th February 1718-buried 5th June 1787
who married Elizabeth Preston in Thame 9th October 1738 though
both were of Long Crendon. As there were so many Elizabeth Shrimptons
in the village it is too difficult to say which was her burial date.
According to Joyce Donald who wrote the History of Long
Crendon John was the first known Shrimpton needlemaker in the village,
though the trade had been going there for well over 100 years.
She doesn't give her sources of information and indeed on
one point she mentions about an earlier ancestor that he received
a copyright when there is no evidence in the Court rolls that this
actually happened. Anyway she says John came into the trade
circa 1738 and sold his wares to Mackenzie of Whitechapel. From
him descend most of the lines of Shrimptons, and all the needelamakers,
who connect back to Long Crendon including myself descended from
their first child and son James.

Death On the Beat- Police Constable Murdered
In the hedge on the right hand side of Icknield Street, low down you will find a stone inscribed J.D. 1885. In that year at 2.15 am on the dark morning of February 28th.. P.C.Davies of Beoley made a routine contact with P.C. Whitehouse of Wythall. They compared watches. He was never seen again.
At 8.30 am John Twigg of Rowley Green was on his way to work in Weatheroak. He found P.C. Davies lying down in a pool of blood foully murdered with many terrible knife wounds.
When P.C.Davies left P.C.Whitehouse that night he was making for Stecham Farm and his 4 am rendezvous with P.C.Sheppard of Alvechurch, but Sheppard was at home ill, so Davies was not missed as quick as he would have been normally. During the fatal night a fowl house of a nearby farm had been entered and 6 fowl stolen. It was thought that Davies had come upon the thief as he (the thief) was making for Reddich Station.
As the constables whistle and an oak stick were found 200 yards from the body and his handcuffs were still in his pocket it was assumed that the thief had gone quietly for 200 yards before turning on his captor with a knife. Davies`s hands were severely cut where he defended himself, but he had finally succumbed to a gash across the throat.
No cries were heard at Newbould Farm the nearest dwelling though the dog barked fiercely between 3.30 and 4 am.
Superintendent Tyler, of Kings Heath Police, when informed about the murder at once suspected the notorious poacher, one Moses Shrimpton, the terror of Eastern Worcestershire, who despite his 65 years of age, had already committed a brutal assault on a game keeper and had done seven years penal servitude for attacking a policeman.
Recently released from gaol Shrimpton was living in Bartholomew Street Birmingham and there, on 29 February, Superintendent Tyler found him with cuts on his face. His woman companion was found to have a large knife with two blades, this knife had been newly washed and bore traces of blood as did Shrimpton`s clothing.
Enquiries proved that Shrimpton had been out all night. Shrimpton was arrested and charged with the murder. He protested his innocence but was duly sentenced to death and hanged at Worcester Gaol on Whit Monday 25 May 1885.
The story is told that a confession was found in Shrimpton`s snuff box.
Meanwhile Davies had been buried on Tuesday 5 March 1885 in Beoley Churchyard on the hillside overlooking the countryside he had tramped on his beat. His widow was granted the maximum gratuity of £60.18.8d. The public were more generous in subscribing £1,408-1-8d was raised for the murdered constables dependants.

EXECUTION . - Moses Shrimpton, convicted at the last Worcester Assizes of the murder of the policeman Davis who had detected him returning from a poultry stealing expedition at Beoley, near Redditch, on the night of the last day of February in the present year, was hanged within the Worcester county prison yesterday morning. On account of the general holiday an effort had been made in the locality to have the execution deferred, but no petition for a remission of the sentence was ever even thought of. Shrimpton for a long periiod had no honest source of livelihood, but was a noted poacher and robber of henroosts. On the occasiion of one of his commitments while being conveyed to Sworcester Gaol, with which he had become somewhat familiar, he contrived to escape from his custodians, and for a time nothing was heard of him. at the Worcester Races, which are held in sight of the walls of the county prison, eh was duddenly confronted by an office, who asked him why he had given the police the slip. he answered very civilly that he was too unwell at the time to undergo imprisonment, but that after he had "had his fligh" at the races she should give himself up. He kept his word, for the next day he presented himself at the gaol door and he duly served out the period of hard labour to which the magistrate had sentenced him. During his incarceration in the condemned cell Shrimpton listened with respectful attention to the ministrations of the gaol chaplian, the Rev. A.Telfer. Yesterday morning the condemned man rose at 6 o'clock, ate a spare meal, and when the final procession was formed from the condemned cell to the drop he walked firmly and without assistance. Berry, of Bradford, was the executiioner. A long drop was given to the culprit, whose head was partially severed from his body. Mr. Hughes, county coroner, held the usual formal inquest on the body in the course of the morning.

I think my favourite record is Thomas 1845-1939. His Army record ended with him being unfit for military service due to valve disease of the heart which came on after a fall in the gymnasium at Chatham in 1865. The Army stated at the time he can do but little to earn a livelihood. He then went on to join the Oxfordshire Police force and the Met in 1871 where he served for 26 years. He retired in 1897 and would have received a Met pension for the next 42 years which I don't think is bad for someone ruled out in his early 20s. His Army record also says he had a fore toe of on both feet shorter than the others. You can still see his gravestone in Long Crendon churchyard.
